Words possess an incredible power: they can heal, inspire, and uplift. With this understanding, on June 7, 2024, the young authors from Voices of Future Generations Middle East (VOFG) visited Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital. Their mission? To bring joy and light to the young patients there by sharing the enchantment of their stories.

By providing essential healthcare services, Al Jalila Speciality Children’s Hospital endeavours to create a healthier and more inclusive community for all children in Dubai – this is an ethos that resonates deeply with VOFG’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

As we gathered in the outpatient area of Al Jalila Hospital, the anticipation was palpable. The children, some accompanied by their parents, listened intently as we read aloud. Their eyes lit up with curiosity and wonder as the stories unfolded, taking them on journeys far beyond the hospital walls. We also had the privilege to visit the wards and read out to the young patients admitted there.

Reflecting on the visit, Dr. Hamda Abulhoul, Consultant Paediatrician in Inborn Errors of Metabolism at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital shared, "Through the power of stories and the kindness of hearts, a world was created within the Amal clinic where every child, regardless of their circumstances, could find hope, joy, and healing. The inspirational young authors transported anxious children to familiar landscapes filled with heroes and heroines, making the experience profoundly positive and uplifting for all involved. Their stories, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, not only entertained but also educated and empowered young minds. Together, the healthcare volunteers and child authors built a future where compassionate care knows no bounds."

Through this memorable visit, the VOFG authors reaffirmed their dedication as SDG ambassadors by contributing to the following goals:

Reading to sick children beautifully supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. It provides emotional support and reduces stress, which can make a big difference in how they feel overall. Sharing stories offers comfort and a welcome distraction during their hospital stay.

When it comes to SDG 4: Quality Education, this activity is fantastic because it promotes literacy and a love for reading. Even if the kids are missing school because they're not well, reading keeps them engaged and intellectually stimulated.

This initiative also aligns with SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by giving hospitalized children the chance to enjoy similar experiences and educational benefits as their healthy peers, preventing feelings of isolation and exclusion.

Lastly, the VoFG authors’ visit reiterates SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by fostering the spirit of volunteerism and community service. The authors of Voices of Future Generations Middle East were not just there to read, but to share in a collective act of kindness and compassion. It reminded us that in giving our time and our stories, we receive so much in return – the joy of connection, the warmth of shared experiences, and the fulfillment of making a difference in someone's day.

Looking back, the day at Al Jalila Hospital reaffirmed our belief in the transformative power of literature. It's more than just an escape; it's a tool for empathy, understanding, and healing.

Author Bio:

Mir Faraz is a student at The Winchester School, Jebel Ali, and the 1st Place Winner of Round 4 of Voices of Future Generations Middle East. And while most of us will never have the opportunity to indulge on a massive scale, there is a lot of money out there, sloshing around in the world economy. A lot of it doesn’t seem to be doing much good – but what if we could get hold of some of it?

I turned my daydream into a thought experiment in my new book, How to Spend a Trillion Dollars. It imagines we have control of one per cent of world gross domestic product, which comes to about $1 trillion. By comparison, the richest 1% of people in the world own about $162 trillion in assets. I set some rules: no spending on military projects, and no spending on media or politics. You have to spend a trillion dollars on projects to improve human health and welfare, advance scientific knowledge, or protect and save the environment. I came up with ten megaprojects. From solving world poverty, to searching for alien life in solar system and beyond. I look at spending money aimed at curing all diseases and extending human lifespan, and at establishing a lasting human settlement on the Moon. There is an incredible amount of things we could do, for what in the grand scheme of things is not that much money.

The world faces many problems. The most pressing are the problems of climate change and the collapse of biodiversity. These are huge issues, and frankly some scenarios we could see in the coming years and decades are quite terrifying. But what I found in my book is that we already have the means to solve these problems. It will take political will, society will need to change, and our consumption will need to become sustainable, but the solutions are there and investment in the right areas can really do good – it could, in fact, save the world.

This decade is one of the most consequential in the history of the world. What we do now, in the next few years, will shape the planet for centuries to come. I’ve outlined the ways we can do this. From speeding the transition of our energy use away from fossil fuels, to restoring and protecting vast areas of land and sea in order to drawdown carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and to tackle the extinction crisis. We don’t have the trillion dollars, but the more we understand that the world’s problems can be solved, the more optimism and momentum we can build, and the more pressure and influence we can put on the rich and powerful people in the world.

We can do this. Indeed, we must do this. How would YOU spend the money?

Although there is nothing wrong with make-believe ones, mine were real experiences that I loved to share with others.

The second reason was because I wanted to record my experiences. Horses have always been an essential part of my life, and growing up around them has shaped the way I am today, which inspired me to write and share those valuable experiences with other people. People around me would always recall the little moments that they remember with my horses and it made me realize how sad it made me feel to lose those memories for myself, so I decided to write them down.

Horses were my teachers, and I believe they have shaped me to be a better human. Children who grow up with pets learn simple things that may not be taught to them without experience. First and foremost, they learn to listen; animals can’t speak our language, but we may learn to read their body language and facial expressions to better understand them. They also learn to think of others before themselves: children who are responsible for their pet’s well-being learn how to care for their pet’s basic needs and learn patience along the way. My horses were and still are my teachers, and I can’t imagine how I would have grown up without those few hours a week I spent at the stables.

Being outside in nature and around animals was a positive influence throughout my childhood, and I’m very blessed to have grown up in a household that appreciates nature and wildlife. One of my favorite memories during my childhood was having breakfast before school with my family, while watching wildlife documentaries before we went to school. Later on, during the day we sat down and talked about different types of birds, mammals or fish that live in the Arabian region or around the world.

I learnt about the wildlife in our region from the few moments every day I spent with my family, whether indoors or at the farm, and that helped me understand my heritage as well: I learnt about the different type of gazelles, birds and fish in our region, and how they are named both in Arabic and English and even why they are named that way.

As a grown-up, I now realize that this information was a big part of my education at home. It helped me appreciate the wonders of nature, and enjoy family time because it was always educational. I never thought that animals would end up being endangered, or our Earth would go through climate changes like global warming. It does make me sad that some other child might not experience what was a big part of my growing up. That’s why I feel so strongly about animals and saving their homes.

One of my favorite books that I loved reading throughout my childhood was Matilda by Roald Dahl. I loved Roald Dahl’s style of telling stories and enjoyed the little bits of humor he added to his stories. Matilda was one of my favorite characters in a children’s story: she was in many ways relatable and I admired her intelligence as well as her determination.

Another series I thoroughly enjoyed when I was much younger were the Little Princess books by Tony Ross. A very different character from Matilda; so much so that you might argue that the Little Princess and Matilda stand on different sides of the character spectrum, with one being much more mature and self-disciplined while the other was loud, childlike and demanding. Now I see why I loved both of them so much: they were strong characters who weren’t shy of showing who they were, no matter how little everyone thought they looked, and that in my opinion is a good role model to any young girl or child who reads these books.

Another good influence I can proudly recall happened in our local community. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the exact date, but the reaction of our community is something I would not forget. There was a parade of some sort a few years back, I believe people were celebrating the UAE’s National Day; with all the celebrations and crowds of people and cars, the streets were unfortunately littered with confetti, empty bottles of water and lots of trash. Local youth clubs and groups went on social media and asked people to come and help clean the streets of Dubai, and that resulted in a lot of people going out and helping the cleaners. That was a favorite memory of mine where I saw a positive impact on our local community, and I hope to see more people take action in helping to keep our environment clean.

Selfless good deeds are motivating to see, and so are stories: creating a character from our region in a story helps people from our community relate to the character, and the problems he or she faces. A relatable character encourages others to read more about them, step inside their shoes and understand how they would overcome their problems. Who better to represent our local community than the locals from our region? This is how we can overcome misconceptions and assumptions that only hinder our growth as a society.

Voice of HH Sheikha Hissa bint Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Sheikha Hissa, a passionate horsewoman and writer, is the author of Tajaarub: From a Horsewoman’s Journey, which explores the powerful connection between humans and horses.
