As a sixth-grade teacher, I was trained to engage measurable verbs and frame questions with a conscious focus on structured objectives, for example, list, classify, sketch, connect, defend, or design to support my students’ understanding of the exam questions and how to answer them effectively. I realised how abstract some of the higher order thinking verbs would appear to my classroom of second language learners, and so the idea of turning abstract to concrete became an obsession. Browsing through ideas and articles, the connection between colours and perception of ideas really struck me. I decided to explore the concept of linking thinking to colours.

Critical thinking is a complex process. And to highlight the importance of processes we can say that facilitating a child’s understanding on identifying the right process can consciously contribute towards their academic and personal growth. I started viewing the Blooms’ thinking levels as integral processes to critical thinking and knew that they would remain abstract until translated to a visual or broken down to concrete questions.

By turning the thinking process to colours, The Critical Thinking Programme aimed to help young learners visualize what thinking looks like and delve into decision-making centered around identifying the right process as a tool to design their way to success. This independence and academic growth, deeply tied to a student’s sense of self efficacy and achievement, arises from being aware of their own thinking faculties and actively contributing to their own success.

As an English language and homeroom teacher, I decided to introduce the programme as a pilot project for my sixth graders. The thinking peas, as we called them, represented the different levels of thinking. Red stood for remembering, green for understanding and applying, blue to analyse and evaluate and yellow indicated synthesis and creativity. Each student had a labeled name box on their table through the lesson and to encourage participation, I introduced the programme as an incentive to win points for sharing ideas, asking questions and engaging their critical thinking skills. Remembering earned 1 point, understanding and applying earned 2, analysis and evaluation 3 and creativity carried 5 points. The instruction to ‘open their boxes’ at the beginning of the lesson gradually became a powerful symbol of ‘thinking in action’ and they knew the questions would flow in with the coloured peas to recognize their cognitive abilities. Externalising their thought process improved their communication skills, and they learnt how to express their ideas with confidence and autonomy.

We counted their points at the end of each term and displayed graphic growth for each child’s thinking in action. This showcased incredible academic growth as they became more confident and skilled in making informed decisions. A blend of colours in their name box spoke volumes about them as analytical thinkers. In time, maintaining their thinking log books helped them become more familiar with learning processes and strategies to engage for each challenging question that came their way.

Education is fundamentally about asking questions.

The journey of developing a better understanding of the world around us has a lot to do with the type of questions that we ask. The growth of the mind is witnessed in the complexity of our questions. As a result, schools, educators and leaders list critical thinking as a key success indicator to raising a promising, more analytical future generation.

The Critical Thinking Programme has been an effective tool for introducing young children to their own thinking faculties and encouraging them to ask questions and share their opinions and ideas without the fear of failure. Linking thinking to colours revealed a spectrum of thinkers in my classroom. Each one carrying a different blend of colours.

Shama Noman is a thinking teacher, and educator with 23 years of teaching experience in the UAE. Let’s show our kids how much we love reading so they’ll want to join in too.

Make reading a special part of the day: I’ve found that setting aside a cozy time each day just for reading (no mobile phone around) whether it’s before bed or during a quiet moment in the afternoon, it can be a wonderful way to wind down and connect with our kids. It is a perfect bonding time that will always be cherished.

Create a little book corner: At home, I set up a special spot where books are always within reach. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just a comfy place where my child can curl up with a good book.

Select books they like: I always try to choose books that match my child’s interests—whether it’s dinosaurs, princesses, or outer space. The right book can truly spark their love for reading, and I’m sure you’ll see the same.

Share the magic of reading aloud: Reading stories together with fun voices and asking questions as we go brings the story to life. It keeps my child engaged, and it’s a simple joy we both look forward to.

Explore the library together: Regular trips to the library have become a big adventure for us. Let your child pick out books and participate in Storytime sessions. It’s such a fun way to make the library feel like a welcoming, magical place.

By including these little habits in our routine, we can help our children discover the joy of reading in a way that feels natural and enjoyable for both of us. One remarkable way to do this is by diving into the pages of "Finding the Language," a captivating book written

by Indigenous child author Adelyn Sophie Newman-Ting. This enchanting story not only entertains but also educates young readers about the vital connection between language, land, and cultural preservation.

A Magical Adventure Awaits

In "Finding the Language," we follow the endearing characters of Kesugilakw (Kesu) and Bob, who have shared a deep friendship since infancy. Their journey begins as they venture into the forest, a place that transforms into a realm of magic and wonder. Here, they encounter gwa’wiña, a raven, and u’ligaan, a wise wolf. Both animals can speak and understand the children, making for a profound and enlightening dialogue. The narrative unfolds as gwa’wiña and u’ligaan reveal to Kesu and Bob the critical role the land plays in creating Indigenous languages and the looming threats to both. Through these conversations, readers are introduced to the idea that languages and lands are not just cultural artifacts but vital components of the Indigenous identity that need safeguarding.

Empowering the Next Generation

Adelyn Newman-Ting’s storytelling brilliance shines as Kesu, Bob, gwa’wiña, and u’ligaan collaborate to raise awareness among their community's children. They come together to educate their peers about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the United Nations, particularly Goals 4 and 13. Goal 4 emphasizes the need for inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education, while Goal 13 urges us to combat climate change and its impacts. This aspect of the story highlights the importance of global awareness and action, showing young readers how they can contribute to these critical goals. By intertwining the narrative with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Adelyn not only honors

these rights but also empowers children to recognize and advocate for the preservation of Indigenous languages and lands.

Cultural and Linguistic Richness

What sets "Finding the Language" apart is its use of Kwakwala, an Indigenous language, which Adelyn weaves seamlessly into the story. This linguistic inclusion serves to immerse readers in the cultural richness and beauty of the language, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding. Through this integration, Adelyn emphasizes the significance of language preservation and the cultural heritage that it represents.

A Call to Action

"Finding the Language" is more than just a book; it is a powerful tool for education and advocacy. It encourages readers, especially young ones, to reflect on the importance of preserving both Indigenous languages and the natural world. The story’s message resonates with the spirit of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples by highlighting the intertwined fates of language, land, and identity. As we celebrate today, let us take inspiration from Adelyn Sophie Newman-Ting’s heartfelt work and remember that each of us has a role to play in supporting and preserving the rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures and languages. "Finding the Language" is a wonderful starting point for anyone seeking to understand and appreciate the profound connections between our world’s diverse cultures and the natural environment that sustains them.

By exploring and sharing stories like this, we contribute to a global conversation about respect, preservation, and action—a conversation that must continue every day of the year.

Reading holds a certain magic that transports us to distant lands, introduces us to fascinating characters, and immerses us in diverse cultures—all from the comfort of our favourite chair. Words possess an incredible power: they can heal, inspire, and uplift. With this understanding, on June 7, 2024, the young authors from Voices of Future Generations Middle East (VOFG) visited Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital. Their mission? To bring joy and light to the young patients there by sharing the enchantment of their stories.

By providing essential healthcare services, Al Jalila Speciality Children’s Hospital endeavours to create a healthier and more inclusive community for all children in Dubai – this is an ethos that resonates deeply with VOFG’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

As we gathered in the outpatient area of Al Jalila Hospital, the anticipation was palpable. The children, some accompanied by their parents, listened intently as we read aloud. Their eyes lit up with curiosity and wonder as the stories unfolded, taking them on journeys far beyond the hospital walls. We also had the privilege to visit the wards and read out to the young patients admitted there.

Reflecting on the visit, Dr. Hamda Abulhoul, Consultant Paediatrician in Inborn Errors of Metabolism at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital shared, "Through the power of stories and the kindness of hearts, a world was created within the Amal clinic where every child, regardless of their circumstances, could find hope, joy, and healing. The inspirational young authors transported anxious children to familiar landscapes filled with heroes and heroines, making the experience profoundly positive and uplifting for all involved. Their stories, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, not only entertained but also educated and empowered young minds. Together, the healthcare volunteers and child authors built a future where compassionate care knows no bounds."

Through this memorable visit, the VOFG authors reaffirmed their dedication as SDG ambassadors by contributing to the following goals:

Reading to sick children beautifully supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. It provides emotional support and reduces stress, which can make a big difference in how they feel overall. Sharing stories offers comfort and a welcome distraction during their hospital stay.

When it comes to SDG 4: Quality Education, this activity is fantastic because it promotes literacy and a love for reading. Even if the kids are missing school because they're not well, reading keeps them engaged and intellectually stimulated.

This initiative also aligns with SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by giving hospitalized children the chance to enjoy similar experiences and educational benefits as their healthy peers, preventing feelings of isolation and exclusion.

Lastly, the VoFG authors’ visit reiterates SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by fostering the spirit of volunteerism and community service. The authors of Voices of Future Generations Middle East were not just there to read, but to share in a collective act of kindness and compassion. It reminded us that in giving our time and our stories, we receive so much in return – the joy of connection, the warmth of shared experiences, and the fulfillment of making a difference in someone's day.

Looking back, the day at Al Jalila Hospital reaffirmed our belief in the transformative power of literature. It's more than just an escape; it's a tool for empathy, understanding, and healing.

Author Bio:

Mir Faraz is a student at The Winchester School, Jebel Ali, and the 1st Place Winner of Round 4 of Voices of Future Generations Middle East. To one day be able to walk into a bookshop and see MY books on the shelves – to see my stories and my voice out in the world. There was one small problem. As a child I was chronically shy. So shy, I was too afraid to speak up in class or ever share any of my stories.

It took many years to realise that even shy people are capable of achieving of big goals. And so, in 2019 I sat down to write my debut children’s book.

Inspired by my deep love of animals, The Last Bear tells the story of a 11-year-old girl who meets, befriends and then saves a wild polar bear. The book was never intended to have an environmental angle – at heart I just wanted to focus on this extraordinary friendship between girl and bear. But as I started researching Arctic habitat, it soon became clear that it was impossible to write a story about a polar bear without referencing the melting ice-caps.

The Last Bear was a book written from my heart. It’s an adventure story with a powerful emotional heart. And despite its Arctic setting, something about it struck a universal chord with readers all around the world. Since its publication in the UK in 2021, it has now been published into 25 different languages, including Arabic, won multiple awards and become a bestseller.

Lovely as this all was, I soon came to realise that the best part of being a children’s author was not the external recognition, but the impact I was able to make – including shining a spotlight on these incredible animals who so desperately need our help.

As Bear teaches April the power of her own roar, I would love everyone to know, no matter how small or shy you may feel on the inside, you’re never too small to change the world.

Voice of Hannah Gold

Hannah Gold worked in the film and magazine industries before taking time out to pursue her dream of writing. Hannah’s books have sold over 290,000 copies worldwide and have been translated into 25 languages. Well, I've got a somewhat easier but very impactful secret for you: it's all about something called "mindfulness," and it's like a magical wand for making the world a better place.

Imagine this: You're on an aeroplane, and they tell you to put on your oxygen mask before helping others. Why? Because you need oxygen first to fill up your lungs before you can help others. And guess what? Mindfulness is your mind's superpower!

Mindfulness means paying close attention to the here and now without judging. Like when you pause and think before reacting to a friend's comment or when you notice how much plastic you use and decide to use less. Mindfulness helps you understand your feelings and problems better, so you can make choices that make you and the world happier. It's like planting seeds of kindness, such as helping a classmate or cleaning up a park, and watching kindness spread all around.

Now, here's the big "aha" moment: Being kind to yourself makes it easy to be kind to others and our planet. Think about it: when you're happy and strong, you have the energy to make the world a better place.

Imagine if all of us changemakers practiced mindfulness every day. We'd become like kindness superheroes! We'd make small but impactful choices like using less plastic or saving energy, and guess what? These small acts help our planet stay healthy.

But that's not all! Mindfulness also helps us be kind to our friends and neighbors. When you're mindful, you notice when someone needs a friend or a helping hand.

And here's the best part: by being a mindful changemaker, you inspire others to be kind and mindful too. It's contagious, spreading a wave of goodness all around you.

So, remember, you don't have to change the whole world at once. Start by being a kind changemaker to yourself. Practice mindfulness, be kind to others, and watch the magic happen!

Essentially, information literacy is the ability of a child to:

Decide what information is needed.

Be able to make choices about the different types of information available both in print and electronically.

Be able to locate and select relevant resources to satisfy an information need.

Be discerning and evaluative about the information that is found, and the process used to find it, and apply it to informed decision-making.

However, it is often the case that students, both at school and in higher education, rely too heavily on sources that are not suitable, such as Google or Wikipedia.

As such, it is crucial that we lay the background in school to improve students’ awareness of the concept of information literacy and why it is essential for their long-term education.

One of the most significant benefits of teaching information literacy to students is that it equips them with the skills they need to find and evaluate information critically. With ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence systems, students have access to a wealth of information, but not all of it is accurate or reliable. Therefore, it is essential for students to learn how to distinguish between accurate and inaccurate information and how to evaluate the credibility of sources.

Another critical benefit of teaching information literacy in AI era is that it helps students become better communicators. With the rise of digital communication, it has become more important than ever to be able to communicate effectively and to understand how to use digital tools appropriately. By teaching information literacy, educators can help students learn how to communicate their ideas effectively and how to use digital tools such as ChatGPT responsibly.

In addition, teaching information literacy can help students develop self-directed learning skills. Self-directed learning involves taking responsibility for one's learning, setting goals, and pursuing knowledge independently. With the vast amount of information available online, it has become more important than ever for students to develop the skills they need to learn independently.

One way to achieve this is by developing a whole-school information literacy curriculum that is embedded within the academic discipline, flexible, holistic, and student-centered.

However, it is not just about what is included in the curriculum; it is also about how it is delivered. The best approach is to collaborate between librarians and teachers to understand what students need and to design lessons that meet their needs.

After all, think of reading-comprehension skills that begin in the Foundation Stage and continue throughout school; the skills are built upon with appropriate instruction at each stage of learning.

This is the ideal approach to information literacy: introducing the skills in the early years, building on them as the student advances through primary school, and introducing new concepts of knowledge-seeking and analysis as they progress.

The key is that by incorporating these ideas into the students learning experience before university or college, they are familiar with these processes on arrival and in a far better position to take their learning forward, rather than grappling with new learning conventions.

Voice of Sanam Bozorgi

Sanam Bozorgi is a Teacher Librarian at The Arbor school, in this blog she argues the importance of teaching information literacy throughout school and how it helps students to understand the nuances of misinformation before they enter the higher education.

Specifically, how we can begin to address the well-being needs of students that are ever changing and very individualized. In order to achieve this, I adopted an action research-based approach which led to the development of PEP (Positive Education Program).

First things first, we needed to develop a school-wide understanding of what well-being is and its individual components. For this, we adopted the PERMAH model developed by Martin Seligman. Consisting of 6 components; positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment, and health, the model had already been used in the region as the foundation for the KHDA longitudinal well-being census.

Next, we merged these components with additional school values (such as respectfulness and curiosity) and coded in a bank of questions that would then be used to individually measure student well-being against these metrics. Each class was then provided with a 20-minute slot in their daily schedule for PEP time. But here is the innovative part, the coaching and activities provided to each class was individualized based on their individual data. So hypothetically speaking, if Grade 1 flagged as displaying low levels of engagement, an engagement focused session was chalked out for them. Grade 2 having issues with health-related topics, health focused sessions were planned for them.

Students, parents, and teachers really bought into the idea which certainly helped in its implementation. However, it’s important that we continue by optimizing such initiatives. Who knows what such a model could look like in ten years? Data being collected in the background by an AI well-being bot? Students being able to determine their own well-being metrics and how they can allocate time to developing them? The possibilities are truly endless and in reality, we are still at the very genesis of exploring the role in well-being and how it can be developed in our education models.

Voice of Robert Williams

Robert has spent the last 9 years working in Dubai based schools in a range of roles such as homeroom teaching, head of science, and director of student success and well-being. But the ocean is working just as hard as the forests, soaking up vast amounts of the carbon we produce. It does this in many ways, but I am talking specifically about the tiniest plants with the biggest impact; the vast blooms of phytoplankton that stretch over huge swathes of the ocean.

And phytoplankton need whales. Why? It’s pollution, it’s the danger of being hit by a ship, or getting trapped in a kilometre-long fishing net. Because of these threats, many species are slowly vanishing from our ocean. Worse still, in lots of places we simply don’t know enough about how many whales there are, or how they are being impacted by the ships, nets and plastic we humans put in, or on, the ocean.

But there is hope.

Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) is heading to Dubai for Cop28 in November where the world’s governments, scientists and nature experts will work together to figure out how we can stop climate change.

WDC will be talking to the decision makers, presenting evidence from new research and arguing strongly, for governments and corporations to do better, especially for whales and dolphins and the ocean.

And the solution – the ‘thing’ we are asking them to do for the ocean, is remarkably simple:

Leave large parts of it alone.

The world’s governments have recently committed to 30% of the ocean protected by 2030.

That's a really big and important promise! Do you have #maincharacterenergy? It’s a BIG hashtag right now. It means being the main character of your own life, actively taking control and focusing first and foremost on yourself, your wants and desires.

#Maincharacter says that the most important thing is us, and what we want. And actually that’s nothing new. Our world is built on the belief that human beings are the most important things. Our lives and how fun we can make them takes priority over any other living species. We measure and value everything according to its impact on us humans.

There’s a word for this. It’s ‘anthropocentric’, which means ‘human-centred’. Which, by the way, is a great word to drop into conversation now and again. It sounds super-smart and always impresses people. Particularly old people like me. You’re welcome ;-)

I think anthropocentrism is responsible for a lot of the problems the world faces. So I take a different view. As an ecocentrist I believe in the value of all living things - both human and non-human species - and natural ecosystems. Ecocentrism is about seeing intrinsic value. That means a living thing has value and is worth something in its own right, not just because of the use it might have to humans.

Ecocentrism helps you realise that we often value things wrongly. Our human-centred view of the planet and its ecosystems is so narrow that we describe all sorts of things as free – like social media, or McDonalds Happy Meal toys for example – which have real costs in terms of energy, the environment and impacts on non-human species.

If you think about it #maincharacterenergy that makes your personal desires the most important thing in the world is really like anthropocentrism that’s drunk a whole crate of Red Bull. It turns our already narrow window on the world into a mirror. But here’s a really powerful plot twist: how about making non-human species the main character? What about a world where the health and happiness of non-human species was equally as important as ours? That’s changing your window big-time stylee. In fact that’s beyond a window. It’s not even a big glass wall. That, my friends, is knocking down the human-centred house altogether!

The stories we tell ourselves are really important. Every villain is the hero of their own story so changing our stories, about the world and our place in it can be very powerful. It can change the kind of future world we imagine, and it can even help us to create it. Because you can’t truly #liveyourbestlife until you find purpose, meaning and value in lives other than your own.

Voice of K D Adamson

K D Adamson is a leading futurist and ecocentrist, writer, presenter, film-maker and adviser who argues that the most important relationship we have is with the future.

Favourite animal/life form: The tardigrade. These tiny creatures are almost unkillable. They can survive extreme heat and cold, even in the vacuum of space. Scientists had to get really creative to kill them, but they managed eventually. If there’s ever a mass extinction event though the tardigrade will have the last laugh.
