Do you have #maincharacterenergy? It’s a BIG hashtag right now. It means being the main character of your own life, actively taking control and focusing first and foremost on yourself, your wants and desires.

#Maincharacter says that the most important thing is us, and what we want. And actually that’s nothing new. Our world is built on the belief that human beings are the most important things. Our lives and how fun we can make them takes priority over any other living species. We measure and value everything according to its impact on us humans.

There’s a word for this. It’s ‘anthropocentric’, which means ‘human-centred’. Which, by the way, is a great word to drop into conversation now and again. It sounds super-smart and always impresses people. Particularly old people like me. You’re welcome ;-)

I think anthropocentrism is responsible for a lot of the problems the world faces. So I take a different view. As an ecocentrist I believe in the value of all living things - both human and non-human species - and natural ecosystems. Ecocentrism is about seeing intrinsic value. That means a living thing has value and is worth something in its own right, not just because of the use it might have to humans.

Ecocentrism helps you realise that we often value things wrongly. Our human-centred view of the planet and its ecosystems is so narrow that we describe all sorts of things as free – like social media, or McDonalds Happy Meal toys for example – which have real costs in terms of energy, the environment and impacts on non-human species.

If you think about it #maincharacterenergy that makes your personal desires the most important thing in the world is really like anthropocentrism that’s drunk a whole crate of Red Bull. It turns our already narrow window on the world into a mirror. But here’s a really powerful plot twist: how about making non-human species the main character? What about a world where the health and happiness of non-human species was equally as important as ours? That’s changing your window big-time stylee. In fact that’s beyond a window. It’s not even a big glass wall. That, my friends, is knocking down the human-centred house altogether!

The stories we tell ourselves are really important. Every villain is the hero of their own story so changing our stories, about the world and our place in it can be very powerful. It can change the kind of future world we imagine, and it can even help us to create it. Because you can’t truly #liveyourbestlife until you find purpose, meaning and value in lives other than your own.

Voice of K D Adamson

K D Adamson is a leading futurist and ecocentrist, writer, presenter, film-maker and adviser who argues that the most important relationship we have is with the future. Action is key.

Each one of us have different visions of a better future, a welcoming future for the generations to come, and each of our voices matter. For me, a better future, is a sustainable one. A one where everyone is a friend to the planet.

It is our responsibility to make sure that the future generations can see this. To achieve sustainability, the first thing we may require, is awareness. It is a very valuable tool we can use to begin laying the foundations for an eco-friendly world.

My vision of a sustainable future has a little bit of everything in it. It involves sustainable cities, based around all 17 of the sustainable development goals. It is important to begin by giving equality to everyone (even animals), so no one feels unvalidated or like their visions do not matter. All genders, races and ages must live together in harmony. Once we achieve this, we have peace, which leads to the people coming together to share their voices confidently. In the future, I wish to see solar powered buildings, more youth-led initiatives so that children may be treated with the same value, proper waste management (which includes materials being sorted into their proper bins), and food security.

But these are ideas that exist. To bring stronger sustainable communities to life, we must add our own unique touch. You should never be afraid to speak up. This is a fight against climate change, this is a fight we’re all supposed to be warriors for. Your voice matters. Together, we can turn our dreams to reality!

Voice of Inayah Fathima Faeez

Inayah Fathima Faeez is an ardent reader and writer from Gems United Indian School,Abu Dhabi. Some plants can even grow in seawater.

What some researchers are doing is getting these tough plants, and turn them into crops – make them useful for us, so we can eat them or put them to other uses that help us.

And some researchers are trying to work how the tough plants out there manage to grow in tough places – and see if they can make existing crops, like wheat, tougher.

These are the sorts of things that I have been doing for quite a long time now.

And now I have started a company to be able to grow lots of these plants so everyone can benefit from all this work. Moreover, this need has manifested itself in several forms – painting, photography, music and so on.

Underlying all of these forms is one common thread – writing. Writing is, has, and forever will be the chief medium for the translation of human emotions.

So then, the big question that percolates through the walls of our minds is ‘How do we build and nurture this art in the future generations – our children?’

The ‘Wonder Years’ (ages 5 to 15), the time when imagination, fantasy, the compelling and natural inclination to be what one is not (but surely can be one day) needs to be tapped to utmost propensity.

In my teaching career, I have found that there are multiple ways to do this but no one way is the elixir for it.

Therefore, my first suggestion is to provide kids a platform to SHINE ON. There is no one who does not appreciate a word of acknowledgment and it is more so with children. Exceptional pieces of writing must be acknowledged through school weeklies and newsletters to encourage them to write more. Social media should go gaga about the achievements of budding authors. This in turn will also inspire other children to try their hand at writing.

Once this has been achieved, the next step would be to go CLUBBING. Gathering all young, budding authors to form a Writer’s Club will provide them the opportunity to share ideas, analyze, critique and suggest ways to hone their skills.

WOW (Writers Observe Writers) is a terrific opportunity where accomplished talents exhibit the fine nuances of engaging the reader through the power of words. The young writers will thus deepen their understanding of the use of various elements like imagery, climax, anti-climax and how to amalgamate these into a story worth reading.

Make it PERSONAL. No idea is a bad idea. This maxim must be continually reinforced in every child. The mentor here plays a vital role in instilling confidence through personalized teacher feedback. The teacher can guide the rampaging flow of ideas and help their budding Rowlings and Blytons and Dahls. What the teacher simply needs to remind oneself is ‘Positivity is a good parasite.’

Finally, it is time for RBL (Reading Between the Lines). A prerequisite to good writing is to know fully well the message, the moral, the endgame that the piece of writing wants to convey. The best way to do this is to widen the horizon of the genre of books read. Extensive reading begets extensive writing. Only when these young writers will do so will they be able to replicate the fine art of writing.

The greatest and most crucial of all strategies is to keep the fire of creative writing kindling in the hearts and minds of our young authors. Using these strategies, we can create an environment where young writers thrive to their full potential.

Voice of Sharon Monis

Sharon Monis, a teacher at GEMS UIS, exemplifies the quote, “Passion is energy”. This is normally caused by the uptake of CO2 from the atmosphere. The root cause of most ocean acidification is burning fossil fuels, an unsustainable, finite method of extracting energy that has many other serious consequences.

Eutrophication is the process by which entire bodies of water, or parts of them, become more and more enriched with minerals and nutrients. This may not sound bad, but it has unnatural consequences. It can cause algal blooms. Some algae can produce toxins that are harmful to other forms of life. They can even cause dead zones to form, which we will also explore. The main causes of eutrophication are runoff from agricultural land (Nitrogen) and households and industry (phosphorus)

Dead Zones are areas or bodies of water that contain no oxygen. This is known as Hypoxia. Hypoxia occurs when dissolved water falls to (or below) a concentration of 2ml of oxygen per litre of water. In dead zones, little to no aquatic flora or fauna can survive. Those who are mobile (able to move) can make efforts to escape and save themselves by leaving the area. Dead zones can be caused by algal blooms or can occur naturally, however they are mostly caused by or accelerated by human activity.

Coastal cities are at risk of flooding due to sea level rise. Chris campaigns tirelessly for wildlife and the planet and he's also a really genuine, funny, decent bloke. And even though he's massively in demand these days, he still returns my occasional emails. As an educator of English Language Arts and Science to Middle School students my challenges were awaiting me in and out of the classroom. I can happily say I am a 21st century teacher, one who knows the loops of an “online interactive” teaching platform- but was this enough to keep up with these middle schoolers…. No comment! The misconception- “working or studying from home”- was initially interpreted as things are going to be easier, but were they? Not at all. Longer planning time, longer working hours, balancing house life with work life. No human interaction due to the pandemic. The anxiety of not knowing when we would next meet family, friends, coworkers, students, and teachers. This was the phase that felt like paralysis. The constant what, how, why, when, where questions and not having the answers available.

When it started, I would constantly ask myself a question, “Are they the only ones learning in this pandemic? Will they grasp the concepts I teach them in the manner I want them too? How will I help the one’s that need extra help with this BARRIER of the screen?”, and almost all of the time I would respond knowing that I learned from these students daily too, that we managed to schedule extra sessions when and where needed, that I wasn’t alone in this constant struggle, and they were feeling the same. Education is evolving and so is technology, therefore some wanted, and some unwanted changes are playing a role in all of this. Your confidence and motivation are important but the bond, relationship and care you have for your students pulls you through. For me this began the phase of performance. I had moved out of the paralysis phase and started to witness them and myself perform.

There were times in online lessons, I would be shocked to see the motivation of my students, not towards just the lesson, but just the fact that they were attending my lesson. They would ask me to keep sessions running after class time or allow them into extra zoom sessions after school hours just so they could revise a concept, spend some time with me and other students online or even help peers. This Pandemic taught me one thing very clearly, the love and passion you invest into your lesson and students comes back to you. The students can feel it and if you value the bond you have with them, they not only love you, but enjoy learning your subject just as much. We explored how to help them become more independent, which resources cater to which learning styles, what motivates their wellbeing, what feeds their brain and their emotions and even though they were on the other side of the screen, and I craved that physical set up in the classroom, they never made me crave their virtual presence. This all wrapped up and gave me my desired and expected results and the progress that I wished for them to meet and exceed.

Voice of Maaria Kashif

Maaria Kashif has been a teacher for 12 years. And while most of us will never have the opportunity to indulge on a massive scale, there is a lot of money out there, sloshing around in the world economy. A lot of it doesn’t seem to be doing much good – but what if we could get hold of some of it?

I turned my daydream into a thought experiment in my new book, How to Spend a Trillion Dollars. It imagines we have control of one per cent of world gross domestic product, which comes to about $1 trillion. By comparison, the richest 1% of people in the world own about $162 trillion in assets. I set some rules: no spending on military projects, and no spending on media or politics. You have to spend a trillion dollars on projects to improve human health and welfare, advance scientific knowledge, or protect and save the environment. I came up with ten megaprojects. From solving world poverty, to searching for alien life in solar system and beyond. I look at spending money aimed at curing all diseases and extending human lifespan, and at establishing a lasting human settlement on the Moon. There is an incredible amount of things we could do, for what in the grand scheme of things is not that much money.

The world faces many problems. The most pressing are the problems of climate change and the collapse of biodiversity. These are huge issues, and frankly some scenarios we could see in the coming years and decades are quite terrifying. But what I found in my book is that we already have the means to solve these problems. It will take political will, society will need to change, and our consumption will need to become sustainable, but the solutions are there and investment in the right areas can really do good – it could, in fact, save the world.

This decade is one of the most consequential in the history of the world. What we do now, in the next few years, will shape the planet for centuries to come. I’ve outlined the ways we can do this. From speeding the transition of our energy use away from fossil fuels, to restoring and protecting vast areas of land and sea in order to drawdown carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and to tackle the extinction crisis. We don’t have the trillion dollars, but the more we understand that the world’s problems can be solved, the more optimism and momentum we can build, and the more pressure and influence we can put on the rich and powerful people in the world.

We can do this. Formative assessment helps teachers to enhance students’ learning skills and develop their academic progress. Nowadays, for educational accountability, countries, schools and teachers are evaluated based on students’ progress results in various types of assessments. Benchmark tests, specifically the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP), is one of the external benchmark assessments in which students are not performing well according to the required targets of the UAE National Agenda 2021. Therefore, I have designed a roadmap that can help all teachers who are responsible for preparing students for the MAP exams and improving their learning skills in general which has been proven in my study titled (Educational Leaders’ Perceptions of the Implementation of Formative Assessment Strategies on Enhancing Students’ Results in the MAP Exams in American Private Schools in the United Arab Emirates).

Educators’ role

My name is Callum the Camel and I am from Morocco in the north of Africa. Full disclosure – I am not a camel because they have two humps, I am a dromedary but humans are very bad at names. They call me a camel and it’s stuck. I don’t mind too much since some of my best mates are camels, and after all what is a hump between friends?

This year has been the hardest but the best year of my life, let me tell you why.

I was just lolloping along as usual, part of the herd, nothing special. My job was to carry tourists and all their bags on camping trips into the desert for a few days. We would go out in a group of about twenty and walk for a little while then set up camp and relax before going home to our nice comfy field in the plains with plenty of delicious thorny acacias to snack on and warm sand to roll in for a good back scratch. It was, to be honest, a pretty cushy number.

But I think I went a bit over the top of on the delicious thorny acacia trees and that was my downfall. Brahim, our human, was putting together a team for an Alice Morrison Expedition. I had heard of this Explorer. She was a nutter, always running up mountains and cycling across continents and I didn’t fancy that at all. I tried to hide right at the back but he spotted me, “Callum, look how lovely and big you are. You’re exactly what we need for three long, tough months across the desert. You’ll be able to carry all the heaviest equipment, and you can live off all that fat when we run out of food.”

3 months? Run out of food? Tough? Heavy? This was not sounding good, but we camels have to earn our crust, so off I set. Alice was aiming to become the first woman ever to walk the whole length of the Draa River Valley in Morocco – 1500km (nearly 1000 miles). Every day, we’d get up before sunrise, get loaded and walk for around five to six hours till we stopped at camp for the night. Before we started, Brahim gave us a team talk, “Now, camels, this will be difficult, you will want to give up, but we are a team and if you just keep walking, if you persevere, you’ll be the first camels ever to walk the length of the Draa. You’ll make history, imagine that.”

It was very hard. The sun was boiling hot, nearly 50 degrees, and the ground under my soft hoof pads was often sharp and rocky. One day, I stepped on a big thorn about the length of a pen and Brahim had to pull it out. I won’t repeat the very bad swear words I said. It hurt a lot.

We were walking through the desert and often it would be three days before we could drink. Now, we camels pride ourselves on not having to drink every day but that is a long time, and I was always so happy when Alice and Brahim got water from the well and poured it out for us. I liked shaking my head with all the water in my mouth and giving them a little shower to say thank you.

The worst part, though, was when we got to the wilderness. Because there had been no rain for a long, long time we had nothing to eat. My stomach rumbled and grumbled as I waited for our one meal a day of oats. Alice tried to help. She always saved her orange peel for me and gave me some of her biscuits at tea break. She ate oats too, but hers were a weird human type called porridge. Fortunately, I had my nice fat hump and I could use that to give me energy.

The months passed and I kept going. Sometimes I sang (I sound a bit like Harry Styles), sometimes I played fantasy football, sometimes I told Alice jokes although she never seemed to get them and sometimes, I looked around me at all these new places I was passing and felt amazed. Mainly though, I just persevered, kept on walking even when I was tired and hungry, and we still had a long way to go.

Then, all of a sudden, the air got cool and I saw birds for the first time in months. Ahead of me there was something big and blue with white tops that made a kind of roaring noise. Alice started whooping and running around. “Thanks be to God,” said Brahim. “We have reached the sea.” He led us into this big, moving mass of water and I felt a new feeling. I felt proud. I had made it across 1500km and I had become the first camel ever to walk the Draa River Valley in Morocco.

“Callum, you are a hero,” said Alice, “You have done what no camel has done before and now your name will be written in the history books – Courageous Callum, Dromedary of the Draa.”

Voice of Alice Morrison

Alice Morrison is a Scottish Adventurer based in Morocco.
